Happy (late) Veteran's Day

a little family history......
Veteran's Day was last Thursday, so I was reading this email my Grandpa had sent us a while back about when he was drafted to fight in the Korean Way. Both of my Grandpas were drafted- I can't even imagine- and my Grandmas had to just wait for them while they were at war- also unimaginable. I'm so grateful for their service and their sense of duty. My Grandpas are both very kind and loving people and came back to raise some pretty great families.
I was teasing my brother Chris about "not counting" to get a free discount meal at- I think Chili's?- for Veteran's Day because he wasn't really in the armed forces, but, now I feel bad so I should include him too. Chris is going to med school in Maryland through the Air Force, so every so often he has to report for some type of basic training and wear a uniform, learn protocol and pass fitness tests. Chris is also going to be spend the first 7 years out of med school placed wherever the Air Force needs him to be. He'll be doing a great service and he is actually excited about all of it.

The bearded guy is my oldest brother Jordan, who's studying for his doctorate in Philosophy of -I think Epistemology?- at Princeton. Doesn't he look the part?

Below is the email that my Grandpa DeLange sent the fam- it's pretty cool- it's his perspective on everything and he has a great attitude.

Dear Family and Friends,
An article in today’s paper reminded me, of all people, of the Forgotten War, sometimes referred to the Korean Police Action. The war started 60 years ago today and I decided that you should all hear a little about it and give a little thought to the ramifications of that war. I and 3 of my friends were walking the streets of San Diego on a vacation when we saw the headlines on the newspapers. Little did I know then about how that would change my life big time. During the next two years I went to Weber State and graduated and like most other Americans didn’t pay much attention to what was going on in Korea, except when President Truman relieved General MacArthur of his command in Korea. In retrospect I was trying to remember if I was upset at that action, or fully in favor of it. I think I was in favor, but hated to see it happen because MacArthur had been such an important figure in the Pacific War just 6 or 7 years earlier.

In early 1952 Jo Ann and I were talking about marriage and making plans for me to be an attorney practicing business law. I took the physical and psychological tests to be a pilot in the Utah Air National Guard where they would put me through the University of Utah while I served with them as a F-100 (or F-86) pilot. Jo Ann went down with me to Salt Lake to sign up and I did sign up, but, as I was walking out the door the officer said, “wait a minute, how tall are you?” I was 6 foot 4 inches and as it turned out, that was too tall for the F-100 so he tried to talk me into being an air force pilot for the big bombers, or transports. We, Jo Ann and I, didn’t want to do that, so went back to our plans which didn’t include being drafted, but I was drafted and went in the Army in August of 1952. The worst of the fighting in Korea was over when I got there in February 1953 (in a band, if you’ve forgotten). There were a few big battles at the end of the war when the Chinese tried to push the front line a little further South, but it all ended in about July 1953. I served in Korea for almost a year after that and didn’t come home until April 1954.
I’ve seen some documentaries on Korea in which even some of the service personnel said they wondered why they were there and maybe at the time under terrible conditions they were justified in seeing it that way. I didn’t then, or now, question our presence there and my part of it. All you have to do is look at the growth in South Korea versus the lack of growth in North Korea to see what giving the South freedom meant. I think I sent a picture to most of you of Korea taken from the satellites at night and I can’t find it now, but the North is almost black and the South is bright like the populated areas in America. Another visual that is pretty meaningful in my eyes. We were in Las Vegas with Brett and Kiley for one of her soccer tournaments and we were at the outdoor Pirate show at one of the casinos and Brett started talking to some Asians who were Koreans. I asked them where and mentioned that I had been there during the Korean war. The young ones sort of let it slide, but the older gentleman put his hand on my shoulder and thanked me for my service. He said, “the young don’t really realize what the Americans did for us and our freedom, but I do.” I thought at the time that it was a sad situation where something that major wasn’t a big part of their history classes and their knowledge base. I hope that our family will always honor this country and the men and women who served in the military.

Lots of love,

Dad/Grandpa/Tal

Ouch

Okay- so this is really really gross but also really funny- and extremely random. This is probably maybe one of the most random things that has ever happened to me other than when I found out my new college freshman bff's mom and my mom used to be college roommates and still go on vacations together
but anyways....
The other night Jeff and I were watching T.V. and our show was getting bad reception so I got up to move our ghetto antenna around- really not that hard of a task- but being me, I tripped head first into the antenna knocking it to the ground- I kept falling- nose first on top of the antenna. Ouch. The antenna is now stuck way far up my nose. Double ouch. Haha and now is when I start screaming and Jeff's staring at me screaming too haha so I ripped the antenna out of my nose and lots of blood gushes out. It's been about two weeks and blood has finally stopped coming out every time I blow my nose (I've been sick)- really gross and tmi, sorry, I just wanted to share my bad random luck.
I also think this counts as a reason to get cable lol

Procrastination

So I was supposed to be working on my applications tonight..... but holyfreakingcow those things are boring and I was much too busy with THIS haha, but don't click on this link if you have a really big to-do list bc it's a time sucker. It's a thing where you can upload a picture of yourself and then try on different hair styles and different make up. It might sound dumb, but it's like playing dress up without making the mess ok? Annnnd it's helping me decide what I should do to my hair since I'm uber bored with my hair and have had the same hairstyle and color (except for 1 month lol) for the last 20 years of my life and I'm thinking I really need to change it up.

Short and dark....

Keeping it long but darker.....

Oh, and they have hairstyles for men! lol This is Jeff with sexy vampire hair
Yeah. So anyways, I'm thinking I'll change things up next time Jeff goes out of town and It'll surprise him- I'm 99% sure he doesn't read this blog so he won't know- and if by some chance anyone that is reading this runs into him- don't say anything k? k thanks.

Weekend Visitors

A couple weekends ago my Dad and little brother Matt came down to visit. Jeff was out of town on a volleybll trip up in Canada, so it was nice to have them around! We went to a game, did some shopping, went out to eat (a lot) and saw some movies. I loved having them visit and they made the weekend of what had been a very bad week awesome (that week I had locked my keys & phone in the car 3 times (this meant A LOT of walking back and forth), left my car headlights on ALL night which killed the battery, AND locked myself out of my apartment at night with the only spare key in CANADA with my husband).

Grandma and Grandpa PETT

Last week my Grandpa Pett had his 80th Birthday- my mom and all of her sisters were able to make it back to California to celebrate with him-apparently it was quite the party with lots of people from the neighborhood and church all getting together to celebrate him. My mom had everyone write nice letters to him and compiled them all into a book- she also made up some kind of trivia game all about Grandpa lol I was sad that we couldn't be there to see him and Grandma- because they're both pretty awesome people and I don't get to see them as often as I'd like to.

Greetings from India

My little brother Cameron is currently in India working in a Leper Colony and he finally sent my parents some pics! His emails are pretty amazing- he's definitely getting some life experience he wouldn't find back in good ol' Boise. He left for India back in August and he'll head home around Christmas- the only troubling thing is that he sometimes doesn't wear shoes, like in the elephant picture below- that seems a little risky to me- but hey-maybe if you're brave enough to go live in India by yourself and take pictures really close to elephants, than walking around barefoot isn't that big of a deal- I dunno....

Conference Weekend

Usually I'm counting down the weeks until I can sit at home all weekend in sweats and eat a lot of cereal while listening to the Prophet and Apostles, but this time I didn't realize what weekend it was until Friday night. I blame the weather- it's been freaking hot this September and that's not something I generally associate with Conference, but whatever- Conference weekend still came and we loved it, hot weather and all. I made a ginormous thing of home made macaroni and cheese (mac and cheese in any form is Jeff's ultimate favorite-even the 50 cent boxed kind) and my grandma's yummy rolls annnnnnd because I couldn't help myself, some scocheroos. We basically enoyed all of the best comfort foods (cheese, peanut butter, and bread :) ) annnnd listened to some really great talks.

The only frustrating thing was our TV. The dumb thing's not very dependable- especially when our neighbors are having "band practice" and their electronic stuff does something weird to the airwaves and makes our signal go out- lol. I ended up making some quick fixes with a mini lotion bottle to our antenna to get the signal on Saturday, but then on Sunday I gave up on it after working on it for ten minutes (i kept all of the semi-bad words in my head to myself because, after all, this was for conference) so we just camped out on our couch with the laptop and watched it online. Overall, everything ended up working out and I only said that I was going to look up listings for a new place like...5 times-but really, who am I kidding, I love our little shack and its shack worthy price lol There's no way I'm giving our place up- there's even a list of people who want to live in our place (I was kind surprised to learn that lol)! And after listening to Elder Holland's really well timed talk, I should probably be a little more appreciative and grateful for all of the blessing in my life, our little place included.

This is us on our first day of school last year  in front of oue little shack that I'm pretty sure I'll miss at least a little bit when we move
